Minnah’s fingers itch to paint the scene. Behind her the riding party had just begun climbing the steep knoll from the beach. After spending the day riding across the sandy beach, Minnah inhaled deeply, not wanting to forget the taste and smell of the salty air, something she had not experienced in a long time.

How Sakeen had managed to convince Yasmina to allow her the chance to ride by herself, Minnah would never know. Due to her pregnancy, her friend had been enjoying the trip sitting in a carriage with her husband. As they make their way to pregnancy the top of the cliffs where they would make their way back to the palace, Minnah pulls her horse back, wanting to enjoy the view up until the last possible moment.

Nudging her bay horse along, Minnah finally stops, overlooking a cliff that juts out towards the ocean. The path, while rugged, has been tamped down enough from so much use, and she manages to steer the horse closer to the brush along the cliff’s edge. As she halts, a voice calls out to her.

Yasmina, probably.

As she is turning in the saddle, her horse jerks and with a whinny of warning, jolts back onto her hindlegs before darting off in the opposite edge of the cliff down a rugged and steep path. Screaming as she struggles to hold onto the reins and control the frightened horse, Minnah barely hears the shouting of voices and stampede of other horses headed her way.

A dark stallion at her side causes Minnah to cry out for a brief moment before the blurry shape of the rider reaches out and grabs ahold of the horse’s reins. With a swift tug, the rider pulls the frightened beast to a quick and easy stop.

Trembling, Minnah ignores her rescuer and slides off the horse, falling to the ground as she gulps in as much air as she can and digs her nails into the rough, rocky earth. Her ears crash with the sounds of waves below as the breeze whips around them, forcing her hair into her face.

“Are you hurt, Minnah?”

It is only when she raises her head and blinks away the unshed tears from her eyes that Minnah realizes Sakeen is the one that has rescued her from being thrown from her horse or worse. Shuddering, Minnah shakes her head and manages to stammer, “I don’t know what happened.”

“A flock of gulls hiding in the thicket got spooked when you got too close to the edge.”

Minnah nods and manages to stand up, swaying in the cliffsides wind as she glances around. “I don’t think I can get back on the horse. Maybe you should go back and have Yasmina’s carriage brought around?”

Instead of agreeing with her, Sakeen slips off of his own horse expertly and guides both horses to a nearby brush where he can tie the horses by their reins. Finally, he turns to face her, his face set in a grim frown.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea.
